Naomi Osaka v Donna Vekic Head to Head
Osaka and Vekic have crossed paths only once, back in the 2016 Australian Open. The Japanese won that encounter in straight sets.
Osaka Retains her No. 1 Ranking
It is fair to say that Osaka’s form since her Australian Open victory has dwindled a bit. Since then, the best she has done is reaching the fourth round in the Indian Wells Open where she lost to Belinda Bencic.
Perhaps, it is the change in coach or just attempting to get used to the newly found fame on the tour, Osaka’s struggles with consistency are something we have all seen happen to many players. In Miami, she was knocked out by Su-Wei Hsieh in the third round.
In Stuttgart, however, she avenged that victory with a bellicose performance against Hsieh in the opener. With 6-4, 6-3, she made it to the quarterfinal and thus successfully retained her No. 1 ranking. It is also interesting to note that Osaka has never won a title on the clay surface and her win-loss record here is the lowest in comparison to grass and hard courts.
Vekic on a Mission
Just like Osaka, Vekic too has never won a title on clay but by the looks of it, she looks highly determined to break that jinx. Perhaps, the fact that she hasn’t won a title since the 2017 Nottingham Open is driving her too.
Whatever may be the case, Vekic has been playing with some finesse in Stuttgart. In the first round, she defeated Giulia Gatto-Monticone in straight sets and then, powered past Daria Kasatkina with 6-1, 7-5.
The highlights of her year so far include her semifinal run in Brisbane and Acapulco, and the runner-up feat in St. Petersburg, where she defeated Petra Kvitova and Vera Zvonareva.
Osaka v Vekic Predictions & Tips
This is an evenly matched fixture for several reasons. While Osaka has a lot of winning experience, her recent struggles with form mean that she is not as formidable as before. Plus, Vekic has recorded good wins over top 10 players and she can use that to her advantage here. Secondly, neither of them are particularly known for their prowess on clay.
Tip: Under 21.5 games in the match: 4/5 (888Sport)
