Gael Monfils v Reilly Opelka Head to Head
This will be a first meeting between these two players.
Monfils Returns To Action In Estoril Following Injury
Gael Monfils started 2019 with a bang. His off-court events had attracted much public interest, but it was his on-court performances particularly in February which propelled him as a contender to win his maiden Masters 1000 title in Indian Wells.
Monfils was imperious on the hard courts in February in which he reached the finals in Sofia before winning in the ATP 500 event in Rotterdam. He followed that title win with a semifinals appearance in Dubai where he lost narrowly in three sets to Stefanos Tsitsipas.
The Frenchman withdrew from his scheduled quarterfinal meeting with Dominic Thiem at the BNP Paribas Open and has since been sidelined by an Achilles tendon injury. This will be a first outing on the clay for the electric French tennis star.
Can Opelka Be ‘The New Medvedev’ On Clay?
Daniil Medvedev’s clay-court season in 2019 will be a success story that players like Reilly Opelka can take plenty of heart from.
The Russian had won only two tour-level matches on the terre battue prior to 2019 Monte-Carlo Masters. He went on to achieve a semifinals appearance in the Principality and finished runner-up in Barcelona.
For Reilly Opelka – the 6’11’’ American, whose record on clay is even worse off than that of Medvedev – could draw inspiration from the Russian’s recent streak. Opelka won his first tour-level match on clay following his opening round victory over wildcard Pedro Sousa of Portugal.
Monfils v Opelka Predictions & Tips
This is an extremely dangerous match for Monfils who will come up against one of the biggest servers in the men’s game. The danger for the Frenchman is that he will play his first match in almost two months, and he could be rusty in the early exchanges. However, Opelka’s return games lack the zest and imagination that fellow big servers like Isner possess, so we could see Monfils holding serve with very little effort.
Tip: Monfils -2.5 games handicap: 26/25 (888Sport)
