Daniil Medvedev v Guido Pella Head to Head
This will be their second meeting, with the only previous encounter having come on clay as well. Pella had won that Nice Open match in three sets, the final set going into a tie-breaker.
In-Form Medvedev’s Shocking Turnaround
Last season, Medvedev had won just one of the six matches he featured in on clay. Before that, it was 0-4 on win-loss to give him a 1-9 win-loss record over the past two seasons.
So when he came into this year’s clay-court swing, it would have been foolhardy to expect a lot out of him.
What has transpired this year has been nothing short of exemplary. At the Monte-Carlo Masters, he defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas and Novak Djokovic to make it to the semi-finals, before going down to Dusan Lajovic at that stage.
And if one thought this was a one-off, he came into the Barcelona Open and converted that form into something that would have made him very proud. Again, there was a win over Kei Nishikori on his way to the final before going down to Dominic Thiem in the title-decider.
Having already won a title this year, Medvedev will look to start on a positive note against a player on the rise.
Career-Best Ranking for Pella
The Argentine Pella is currently ranked 26th in the world, his best ever ranking on the ATP charts. And it comes as no surprise after his brilliant performance on clay, that have already seen him feature at seven different competitions already on the surface starting with Cordoba.
He made the final at Cordoba, semi-final at Buenos Aires and won the title at Sao Paulo before a brief break for the Sunshine Masters where he won just one of three matches. Back on clay, it has been a bitter-sweet effort for him, with brilliant showings to make it as far as quarter-final in all three competitions – Monte-Carlo, Barcelona and Munich – but defeats to Rafael Nadal, Dominic Thiem and Roberto Bautista-Agut would have pushed him back.
Can he test a player who has been equally good, if not better this season on clay?
Medvedev v Pella Predictions & Tips
This will be a scrappy battle that goes the distance and one can expect a three-setter here. To go a step further, expecting Medvedev to quell the Pella challenge and win it in three.
Tip: Medvedev to win in three sets: 3/1 (888Sport)
