Dominic Thiem v Fabio Fognini Head to Head

The players have met three times on the ATP tour with Thiem leading the head-to-head 2-1. The last time they met was at the Rome Masters 1000 in 2018, with Fognini winning in three sets.

Thiem Hoping For a Deep Run at Madrid

Austrian Thiem has often been referred to as the successor to Rafael Nadal on clay and he continues to search for levels of consistency that he has failed to achieve throughout his short career so far.

Having beaten Novak Djokovic on clay in 2017, and Rafael Nadal in 2018, Thiem continued the trend by defeating Rafael Nadal last week, en route to the Barcelona ATP 500 title.

2019 did not get off to a good start for the Austrian with a poor Australian Open followed by dismal losses on the Latin American clay swing, a place where he has won titles in recent years. Thiem followed this with an Indian Wells Masters 100 victory over Roger Federer, a result not many saw coming.

With the European clay court swing well underway, and with inconsistent form of many of the top ranked favorites, including Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, Thiem will be hoping to pick up from where he left off at the Barcelona ATP 500 and take steps towards deep runs at the various clay court tournaments.

Can Fognini Continue Dream Run from Monte Carlo ?

Fognini has had a career that has always been a mix of sparkles of genius and inexplicable dips in performance. He has been on the tour more than a decade and is currently ranked number 12 in the world, which is a career-high ranking for him.

The Italian is a clay-court specialist, well known for his speed, movement and flair on the court. He has also a reputation for losing his cool on the court, on occasions. After winning five ATP titles in his career, Fognini had the most gloried season of his career in 2018, winning three more titles and breaking into the top 15 of the ATP rankings for the first time ever.

2019 did not get off to the best of starts for Fognini, who lost five matches in a row, going into the Monte Carlo Masters 1000 and he contemplated time off for ankle and elbow injuries. He then went on to win his first ever ATP 1000, against all odds, defeating Alexander Zverev, Borna Coric and Rafael Nadal (in straight sets) en route.

Fognini defeated British number one Kyle Edmund, and Australian John Milman in straight sets thus far at the Madrid Open.

Thiem v Fognini Predictions & Tips

This promises to be a great match on the cards with both players comfortable on the clay and in good form. Both have beaten Rafael Nadal this year as well as multiple times in their career.

Thiem can be a slow starter at times and will need to ensure that Fognini does not dictate proceedings from the beginning. Fognini is in the midst of a purple patch and will come into the match high on confidence. The match promises enthralling rallies and great stroke making. With no obvious favorite, we can expect the match to go the distance with Fognini winning in three sets.

Tip: Fognini to win: 21/10 (888Sport)
