Nadal came into this tournament with question marks raised about his form on clay for the first time in more than a decade. That is because he was beaten at the semi-final stage in Monte Carlo and Barcelona, two events which he had almost made his own over the years.
Whilst he has not been quite so dominant in Madrid, he is still a previous five time winner here, and is the favourite to lift the trophy again come Sunday. He, therefore, will take heart from the fact that he was able to easily meet the challenge of Canadian teenager, Felix Auger-Aliassime in the second round, winning in straight set with ease. Even champions sometimes need a boost.
Tiafoe, Not Renowned for Clay Court Form
21-year-old Tiafoe is currently the second highest ranked American player behind John Isner, but the fact that is only 37 in the world shows how far American men’s tennis has fallen behind. It has been more than a year since he won his debut ATP title at Delray Beach last year, and his most significant achievement since then has been that run to the quarter final in Melbourne.
Not known as a clay court player, he nonetheless got his campaign in Madrid off to a good start, coming from a set down on Monday to defeat Georgia’s Nikolaz Basilashivili, the number fourteen seed. He then followed that up with another hard fought win over Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany on Tuesday.
Nadal v Tiafoe Predictions & Tips
Nadal is the overwhelming favourite for this match at 1/10, whilst Tiafoe is priced at 9/1. Given that the two met in Australia four months ago, and that Nadal cruised through that encounter, he is expected to make short work of the American on his favourite surface.
