Rafael Nadal v Jeremy Chardy Head to Head

Nadal and Chardy have met only twice on tour. The Spaniard won both meetings, the last of which came in 2015 at the Cincinnati Masters.

Nadal Seeks a Ninth Title In Rome

Rafael Nadal will open up his campaign at the 2019 Italian Open against Frenchman Jeremy Chardy with his eyes firmly fixed on winning his first title of the season and in the process claim an unprecedented ninth title at Foro Italico.

His clay-court season has been a total failure by his standards. He is yet to reach a final let alone win a title on the dirt. Nadal has lost three matches on clay this year, which is more than his total losses on the surfaces combined in both the preceding two seasons in which he won a total of eight titles.

The Spaniard will need to preserve another one of his great records in Rome where he has not lost before the quarterfinals and he won last year’s title by beating Alexander Zverev in the final in a rain-interrupted match.

Time is definitely running out for Nadal to make a statement of intent before Roland Garros with the likes of Novak Djokovic and Dominic Thiem peaking as the second Grand Slam of the year is only two weeks away.

Chardy Plays Nadal for the First Time in Four Years

Jeremy Chardy and Rafael Nadal have been on tour for the best part of nearly 15 years. Yet, they have only played twice against each other. Chardy lost both matches in straight sets, but given Nadal’s poor run on clay will he land another knock-out punch on the great Spaniard?

Well, that may be very much possible. The Frenchman picked some useful wins in Madrid against established clay-court specialists in the shape of Diego Schwartzman and Albert Ramos Vinolas. He also defeated Pablo Carreno Busta (another Spaniard in poor form) in Monte Carlo.

Chardy notched an impressive win over Federer before at the Italian Open a few years ago, and he came within a point of taking his first set off Djokovic in Madrid last week.

Nadal v Chardy Predictions & Tips

Nadal has been out of sorts on clay, but before we reach to conclusions we need to hold our hats for the moment. He is still the greatest clay-court player of all time and is World No.2. If there is one man who is capable of turning this around on this surface it is him. With that said, he will be too strong for the Frenchman.

Tip: Nadal to win in straight sets: 27/100 (888Sport)
