Rafael Nadal v Fernando Verdasco Head to Head

The two men have played each no less than 19 times before, with Nadal leading their personal series by 16 matches to three. On clay, Verdasco has beaten Nadal only once on his favourite surface, but that was in Madrid as much as seven years ago.

Nadal Chasing Ninth Rome Title

Nadal is hoping for a ninth title this week in Rome. The defending champion came into the event this week in the unusual position of not having won a title so far this year, after losing at the semi-final stage in his last three events – in Monte Carlo, Barcelona and Madrid.

Despite this, he still remains favourite with the bookmakers to claim the crown on Sunday.

He got his campaign here on Wednesday in thoroughly dominant fashion, beating first Georgia’s Nikolaz Basilashvili, and then Jeremy Chardy of France for the loss of just a single game in each match, suddenly reminding fans and critics of his clay court prowess.

Verdasco Shrugging off Kyrgios Comments

The headlines on Thursday morning as far as Verdasco were concerned centred on comments made by Nick Kyrgios in a podcast whereby he described the veteran Spaniard as “the most arrogant player ever”.

However, by the close of play it was the Spanish player’s tennis which was attracting all the attention after he pulled off a surprise defeat of Dominic Thiem, winner in Indian Wells and Barcelona. He then followed that up with victory over the number eleven seed, Karen Khachanov of Russia, in three sets.

Verdasco now has a battle on his hand but he would already be pleased with the effort to make it this far and his goal now would be to try and push Nadal hard.

Nadal v Verdasco Predictions & Tips

Nadal, who did not escape the scathing comments of Kyrgios either, is the overwhelming odds-on favourite to win the match at 1/16, whilst Verdasco is priced at 49/4. Nadal should easily progress to the semi-finals where he will be looking to go further than he has been able to achieve in recent weeks.

Tip: Nadal to win in straight sets:  (888Sport)
