Johanna Konta v Marketa Vondrousova Head to Head

The two ladies have met only once on the WTA Tour, in the 2018 Indian Wells. The 19-year-old Czech defeated Konta in straight sets.

Konta Finds her Form in Rome

After struggling her form through most of 2018, the former World No. 4 has finally delivered a performance that she can be proud of.

Her season so far has been quite good although, there is still a lot of room for improvement. Following an uneventful start to the year, she had a breakthrough in WTA Rabat, where she reached the final. The Nottingham Open runner-up then played in Madrid where she lost to Halep in the second round.

However, Konta proved herself on Thursday amidst a chaotic match day. She first knocked out Sloane Stephens 6-7(3), 6-4, 6-1, and then defeated Venus Williams 6-2, 6-4, within a span of few hours. The Brit started her campaign originally with a straight-set win over Alison Riske.

That was one of the best runs was Konta this season, who is now serving as a beacon for British tennis players in Rome. She is definitely a prolific player, having won the Miami Open back in 2017.

Vondrousova Continues to Shine

Vondrousova has been absolutely brilliant this season, reaching the final in Budapest and Istanbul. She came to Rome with a win-loss tally of 19-5, which is quite good by all means.

On Thursday, she had one of the best days of her career, defeating Simona Halep and Daria Kasatkina in three sets.

The young Czech knocked out the number three seed 2-6, 7-5, 6-3, in what was an absolute shocker for the Romanian. That was her second such win over Halep this year, with the other one coming in Indian Wells.

Following that, she faced the Russian prodigy Kasatkina and defeated her with a similar score. Vondrousova started her campaign against her compatriot Barbora Strycova, whom she defeated 1-6, 6-4, 7-6(4).

In addition to Istanbul and Budapest, Vondrousova also reached the quarterfinal in Miami and Indian Wells. In fact, with the exception of the Australian Open, she has made it to the final eight and beyond on the WTA Tour in every tournament she appeared in this season.

Konta v Vondrousova Predictions & Tips

On one hand, Konta has the experience but if Vondrousova has proven anything on Thursday, it’s that experience will not be the only factor at play against her. The Czech has won five ITF singles titles on the clay, of the total seven she has won. She is an efficient player and is still quite young, which means she still has the energy to come out firing on all cylinders on Friday.

Meanwhile, Konta has had a good run herself and can certainly reach the semifinal here if she starts strong. All in all, a good game to follow.

Tip: Over 21. 5 games in the match: 9/10 (888Sport)
