Aryna Sabalenka v Laura Siegemund Head to Head
The duo have met only once on the tour, in the 2019 Fed Cup. Sabalenka won that match 6-1, 6-1, with a bolstering performance.
Sabalenka in Need of a Revival
The 21-year-old Belarusian hasn’t had a perfect run on the clay surface so far. In the Madrid Open and WTA Rome, she was handed early exits at the hands of Svetlana Kuznetsova and Alize Cornet respectively.
The Wuhan Open champion has been out of form for a fairly long spell now. She started the year on a sizzling note with a winning run in Shenzhen and later reaching the semifinal in St. Petersburg. But then, she had a couple of uneventful stints in Miami and Charleston. As a result of those wins, she fell out of the top 10.
In addition to the Shenzhen Open, she delivered an equally sensational performance in the Fed Cup against Germany, where she lost just five games in the process. Against Australia in the semifinal, however, she lost to Ash Barty in a decisive encounter.
In her opening match here, she defeated Lin Zhu 6-0, 6-1, sparking hopes of a resurgence.
Can Siegemund Capitalise on Sabalenka’s Misfortunes?
Siegemund is not among the most prominent player on the WTA Tour. With just two titles (both of them on clay), she hasn’t really made a mark on the circuit. She started her journey in Strasbourg as a qualifier and made it to the main draw comfortably.
In her first round match, she defeated Renata Zarazua in straight sets.
The German’s performance this season has been a bit shakier than that of Sabalenka. Ranked at the 76th position, her best run came in Melbourne, where she reached the second round before losing to Su-Wei Hsieh. It is worth mentioning that she did topple Victoria Azarenka on the way.
As for the rest of the events, she was mainly restricted in the qualifiers/opening rounds. She last played in an ITF event in Slovakia where she was a quarterfinalist.

Sabalenka has a strong serve and is a very aggressive player who can very well put Siegemund on the backfoot. But given her rocky form at the moment, it may be a job easier said than done. Expect this one to be a good match where Siegemund will bring her best game forward.
