Simona Halep v Ajla Tomljanovic Head to Head
Halep leads the Aussie by 1-0, with their one and only meeting taking place in the last year’s Cincinnati Open. Tomljanovic challenged Halep in that game, but she eventually ended up losing to the Romanian in three sets.
Halep, Looking a bit Shaky
So far, the clay season has been fairly rocky for the Romanian No. 1. With the action now reaching its inevitable conclusion in Paris, it will be interesting to see how she fares here.
She started her run in Madrid where she made it to the final for the third time in four years. Halep enjoyed a good run, moving past the likes of Johanna Konta, Ashleigh Barty, and Belinda Bencic. Then, in the final, she met Kiki Bertens, who herself is in an exceptional form this season.
Bertens delivered the upset and defeated the number three seed in straight sets.
Halep then played in the Italian Open in Rome, where she was handed a far more shocking loss at the hands of the 19-year-old Czech Marketa Vondrousova in three sets.
After experimenting with coaches at the beginning of the season – a factor that may have played a role in her shaky form, she finally had Daniel Dobre join her team. This decision came shortly before she reached the semifinal in Miami and so far, it has been a good call on her end.
Tomljanovic in with Her Struggles
The 26-year-old Australian has been struggling with her form for the last couple of weeks. Shortly after reaching the semifinal in WTA Rabat, she lost her opening game to Mihaela Buzarnescu in the Madrid.
Then, Tomljanovic went to Rome where she made it as far as the second round before falling to Karolina Pliskova. Most of her season has been along the same lines – defeats in early rounds. There were a few exceptions to this, of course.
The Korea Open runner-up reached the third round in Miami and Charleston and was also the finalist in this year’s Thailand Open.
Halep v Tomljanovic Predictions & Tips
Halep is going to start this match as the overwhelming favourite to win. Paris is where she won her first Grand Slam and she will bring everything over the course of the fortnight to defend her title. She is a formidable opponent on clay and given Tomljanovic’s recent form, it shouldn’t be a problem for her to win this one comfortably.
