Sloane Stephens v Polona Hercog Head to Head

The two women have played each other three times before and Hercog is yet to win a set off the American. Significantly, two of Stephens’ wins have come on clay – in this same tournament five years ago, and more recently, in Madrid at the start of this month.

Stephens, Last Year’s Finalist Ready to Challenge Again

Runner-up to Simona Halep last year, Stephens has enjoyed relatively serene progress to this stage of the tournament, unlike some of the other top players like Naomi Osaka, and Halep herself, who have had to struggle to reach the third round.

She won her first round match against Misaka Doi of Japan on Sunday in straight sets, although she was taken to a second-set tie-break before clinching the win.

There then followed an almost identical win over the Spanish clay court specialist Sara Sorribes Tormo, which saw another straight sets victory, courtesy again of another second set tie break.

Now pitted against an opponent she has beaten easily in their three previous meetings, she will be very confident of reaching the fourth round here again – the fifth time she will have reached his far at least in this event.

Hercog Enjoying Her Run in Paris

This is the second time that the 28-year-old Slovenian has progressed to the third round in Roland Garros, but you have to go back nine years since she last reached this stage.

She got here by first pulling off a minor upset, defeating the number 32 seed, Aliaksandra Sasnovich,  coming from a set down to beat the Belarus player in a third set tie-break.

And then she had another battle against the American Jennifer Brady, which also went to three sets, before Hercog took the third set 6-4.

Stephens v Hercog Predictions & Tips

Stephens is the strong favourite to win at 10/29, whilst you can get 13/5 on Hercog. Whilst there can never be an easy match at this stage of a Grand Slam event, this should prove a comfortable match for the American who must begin to hope for another extended run at Roland Garros.

Tip: Stephens to win in straight sets: 6/5 (888Sport)
