Roger Federer v Leonardo Mayer Head to Head

The two players have met three times on the ATP tour with Federer winning all. This is going to be their first meeting on clay however.

Federer Looking at Yet Another Grand Slam Quarter Final

Roger Federer’s return to clay continues to get better as he makes it to the second week of the French Open, looking at another Grand Slam quarter final in the offering. Returning to Roland Garros for the first time since 2015, Federer has looked convincing with three straight set wins thus far.

Not having played on clay since the Rome ATP Masters 1000 in 2016, Federer has not looked one bit circumspect on the surface and increased in confidence with every match. While still the third favorite behind Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, Federer will start to think of being around next weekend increasingly with every passing round.

Federer’s opponent in the fourth round is Argentinian Leonardo Mayer.

Mayer Tired After His Strong Run?

Argentine Leonardo Mayer has had his best run at the French Open making the fourth round for the first time. The journey has already been tiring for him with long and intense matches against fellow Argentine clay court specialist Diego Schwartzman as well as against Frenchman Nicolas Mahut in previous rounds.

Mayer, currently aged 32, has been on the circuit for a while and been ranked as high as number 21 on the ATP circuit in 2015. His ranking has fallen since and he is currently word number 68. A steady player with good groundstrokes and strong on both winds from the baseline, Mayer is best suited to the clay where he has made all 5 of his ATP singles finals, winning two of them in his career.

He has not been able to pierce through the top ranked players however, particularly because of a game that has been consistent but lacked the firepower needed.

Federer v Mayer Predictions & Tips

Mayer has had a good week and has a steady game and has done well to defeat Mahut and Schwartzmann. However both have been long matches and Mayer will be feeling the effects of them surely. Up against a relatively fresher Federer, who has got his rhythm going on the clay and with no weapons to trouble the Swiss, it is hard to envision Mayer causing too many issues here. Another straight set victory for Federer on the cards.

Tip: Federer in straight sets: 4/5 (888Sport)
