Karen Khachanov v Juan Martin del Potro Head to Head

The two men have played each other three times before, and del Potro has won on each occasion.

All of those meetings though have come on hard courts, including the most recent match in Beijing last year. This will be their first encounter on a clay court.

Khachanov, Looking for First Roland Garros Quarter-Final

This is now the third successive year that Khachanov has made the fourth round at Roland Garros – but he has never been further.

This year he has made relatively serene progress to this stage of the competition, although it should be said that he has benefitted from a relatively easy draw.

In the first round he easily disposed of Cedric-Marcel Stebe of Germany, winning in sets although he was made to work much harder by local favourite Gregoire Barrere, losing the third set to love before fighting back to win the match in the fourth.

However, he would have wanted to hand-pick his third round opponent, Martin Klizan of Slovakia, and the world number 49 duly offered little resistance, taking just eight games off the Russian as Khachanov won in straight sets at a canter.

Del Potro though offers a different level of challenge altogether.

Del Potro, Ready to Challenge Again

Twice a beaten semi-finalist in Paris, including last year, del Potro would have come into this tournament with limited expectations after missing the first part of the season with the knee injury he picked up in China last year.

However, despite being a little bit rusty, he has acquitted himself very well so far.

In his first round match he came from a set down to beat Nicolas Jarry of Chile. And then he had a real second round battle with Yoshihito Nishioka of Japan that went to five sets before Del Potro outlasted his opponent.

However, he had a much more comfortable win against Jordan Thompson of Australia on Saturday, winning in straight sets, although there was still time for the Argentine to get involved in a furious row with the umpire about a disputed line call.

Khachanov v Del Potro Predictions & Tips

Del Potro is the odds-on favourite to win at 8/15 on, whilst you can get 24/13 on Khachanov. The Russian, more at home on a hard court, has proved to be a consistent performer in Paris, but Del Potro knows what it is like to contest Grand Slam semi-finals and finals, and should win, although there may be a tough battle ahead of both men.
