Johanna Konta v Sloane Stephens Head to Head

The two ladies have met twice this season already and Konta has won on both the occasions. They met recently as the Italian Open a few weeks back, where Konta won 6-7(3), 6-4, 6-1.

Konta’s Incredible Run in Paris

Johanna Konta is in a phenomenal form right now – a winning streak that is reminiscent of her form back in 2017 when she peaked in the singles ranking as World No. 4. After battling with her form for a better part of the last year, the two-time Nottingham Open runner-up is finally back on the scene.

Over the course of the last week in the Roland Garros, Konta moved past the likes of Antonia Lottner, Lauren Davis, Viktoria Kuzmova, and Donna Vekic. She achieved all of this without dropping a single set in the process. Of course, she also benefitted greatly from the early exits of Kiki Bertens and Belinda Bencic.

At the same time, given the form Konta is in currently, she may have very well dispatched them with some finesse. She has reached two finals on the clay surface already this season – WTA Rabat and the Italian Open. Before these events, she struggled greatly with her form.

It gets more interesting when we realize that in her entire career, Konta never managed to move past the first round in the French Open. Now, she is set to compete in her first ever quarterfinal against a player who is having somewhat of a resurgence too.

Stephens, Looking Clinical

The 26-year-old American has had a pretty quiet year so far, with not many impressive runs to her name. But courtesy of her performance in last year’s WTA Finals, she had enough ranking points to stay in the top 10.

The first couple of months on the tour were largely disappointing. Her first major breakthrough came in Charleston, where she reached the quarterfinal. But Stephens staged her resurgence in Madrid – shortly after hiring a new coach.

That may have been a very good decision, seeing that the American made it to the semifinal, losing eventually to Kiki Bertens. She failed to repeat that run in Rome, however, implying that she is still rusty.

But through the last week in Paris, Stephens has been nothing short of brilliant. She fought hard to battle past Misaki Doi, Sara Sorribes Tormo, and Polona Hercog. She faced her first real test in the fourth round against Garbine Muguruza, but she subdued the Spaniard with 6-4, 6-3.

With every match, Stephens is looking more and more efficient and is finally getting back to her winning ways.

Konta v Stephens Predictions & Tips

This is going to be a close encounter but Konta should come out as the winner here. While Stephens is determined to reach the final in Paris once again and go the distance, it will be difficult for her to stop Konta, who herself has been on a roll. Plus, there is the psychological edge that the Brit holds over Stephens, thanks to her 2-0 lead in the head to head tally.

Tip: Three sets in the match. (888Sport)
