Roger Federer v Stan Wawrinka Head to Head

The two players have met 25 times with Federer leading the head to head 22-3. All three of Wawrinka’s wins have been on clay, however. Wawrinka’s last win was at the French Open in 2015, which was incidentally the last time Federer played the slam.

This is definitely Wawrinka’s favorite surface and he is a former French Open champion, so he definitely knows what it takes to beat the best here. He is also in the midst of his best form since his return from injury and has had back to back impressive wins. He is likely to be fatigued after the Tsitsipas match, however.

Federer One Match Away from Potential Nadal Clash

Swiss maestro Roger Federer’s return to clay has been a dream come true for him thus far. Returning to his least favored surface after more than three years, Federer is in yet another Grand Slam quarter final, making it his 54th all time appearance at the final eight of a major.

Federer has been in control through the first four rounds, not dropping a set yet. Playing an aggressive form of tennis, and coming up to the net more than is the norm on clay, he has kept the points short to his advantage.

He has maintained that he did not have a goal in mind at this major as he was getting accustomed to where his body and game where on the clay. Federer mentioned after the fourth round that he was happy with his fitness and play and possibly looking at a deep run into the weekend now.

Both Federer and his arch rival Rafael Nadal are now one match away from another epic clash, on the Roland Garros clay. Federer’s next opponent in the final eight is countryman and friend Stanislas Wawrinka.

Wawrinka Plays Compatriot Federer After Epic Fourth Round Win

2015 French Open Champion and former world number three Stanislas Wawrinka, has had a long journey back since his injury lay-off in 2017-2018.

Falling out of the top 150 in the rankings, the return was not easy and met with many disappointments and setbacks. However, the Swiss is in the midst of his best week at a major since, and has had scintillating victories against Grigor Dimitrov, followed by an epic win against Stefanos Tsitsipas in the fourth round.

Wawrinka’s win against Tsitsipas definitely qualifies as the match of the tournament thus far, with a marathon five setter that lasted more than five hours.

An excellent quality of tennis throughout the match, this will be remembered for a clash between two generations and two beautiful single handed backhands. Everytime it seemed as though the Swiss was ready to succumb to the younger legs of Tsitsipas, Wawrinka came up with sheer brilliance to restore control in the match.

Wawrinka’s last quarter final appearance at a Grand Slam was also at Roland Garros in 2017, where he was a finalist losing to Rafael Nadal.

Federer v Wawrinka Predictions & Tips

Federer has been clinical in all his straight set wins and seems fresh and rested. However, the Swiss maestro is yet to be tested and this is definitely going to be his sternest test yet. A great clash on the cards, with two of the best single handed backhands on show. Expect an engrossing battle, but Federer should emerge in four sets.

Tip: Federer in four sets: 29/10 (888Sport)
