Cristian Garin v Salvatore Caruso Bedene Head to Head

The two men have played each other twice before on the Challenger circuit, both times on clay, with Caruso emerging the winner on each occasion. The first meeting was in 2015 in the Manerbio Challenger, and the second encounter in the Como Challenger last year.

Garin, One of the Stories of the Season

The fact that Garin now seeded for events such as this is a mark as to how far he has come in a short time. The 2013 Junior French Champion had struggled for years to make any mark on the senior tour, but this year everything has clicked for him. He qualified for his first Grand Slam event in Melbourne, and, a month later, he reached his first ATP final in Brasilia.

Two months later he went one better and clinched his first ATP title, the US Men’s Clay Court Championship in Houston. And then he added a second title in Munich last month.

He has no form on grass to speak of, having lost in the first round the two times he has entered the main draw at Wimbledon. However, such is his sense of confidence, he could well set that right this year.

Caruso, Surprise Entrant in the Main Draw

26-year old Caruso, ranked currently 147 in the world, does not often get through to the main draws in tournaments, being more at home on the Challenger circuit, where he has won one title, at Como in his native Italy last year. And that appearance came more than five years after his last Challenger final, again in Italy, but this time in Biella, a match that he lost.

However, to his credit he battled through the qualifying rounds at s-Hertogenbosch this week, beating first Filip Horansky of Slovakia and then Marcos Giron of the United States, to earn his shot at Garin.

Garin v Caruso Predictions & Tips

Garin will start the narrow favourite at 43/50, whilst Caruso is 19/20. Caruso has won their two previous matches, but Garin has since moved on to a different trajectory than the Italian, and should have enough to edge the contest.

Tip: Garin to win in three sets: 6/4 (888Sport)
