Gael Monfils v Denis Kudla Head to Head

The two men have never played each other before. This will be the first meeting between the world number sixteen, and Kudla, ranked 68 places below him.

Monfils Survives Tough First Round Battle

Monfils recorded his bets performance of the year back in February, when he defeated Stan Wawrinka in three sets to win the Rotterdam Open, the 8th ATP title of his senior career. He also reached the semi-finals in Dubai, and had two match points to beat Roger Federer in Madrid, only to lose out to the Swiss player in the end.

In his last tournament, he reached the last 16 at Roland Garros, but was beaten in straight sets by the eventual finalist, Dominic Thiem.

Like many French players, he is not known for his form on grass, but did reach the 4th round of Wimbledon for the first time in his long career last year, only to go down to Kevin Anderson.

He was handed a tough draw in his opening round here against the powerful-hitting Steve Johnson, and did very well to come through a tight three-setter, clinching the match on a tie-break in the third set.

Kudla Has Some Form on Grass

The 26-year old Ukrainian-born American is currently ranked 84, down from his career best of 53 which he achieved back in May 2016.

Better known on the Challenger tour where he has won eight career singles’ titles, he has some form on grass, having reached the 4th round at Wimbledon himself back in 2015, the same year he won the Challenger event on that surface at Ilkley in the UK.

Prior to this tournament, his best result of the year so far also came on grass, in Surbiton in England last week, where he reached the semi-final of the Challenger event before losing to Victor Troiki of Croatia. He carried that form into Stuttgart by easily disposing of the qualifier, Viktor Galovic of Croatia, in straight sets on Tuesday.

Monfils v Kudla Predictions & Tips

Monfils is odds-on favourite for this match at 7/15, whilst Kudla is priced at 23/12. Whilst Kudla has some form on grass, Monfils, now battle-hardened after his match with Johnson, should have too much in his locker for the American.

Tip: Monfils to win in straight sets: 1/1 (888Sport)
