Felix Auger-Aliassime v Matteo Berrettini Head to Head

This will be a first meeting between these two players.

Will Third Time Be Charm For Auger-Aliassime?

Felix Auger-Aliassime advanced to his first grass-court final of his career after Milos Raonic was forced to withdraw in their scheduled all-Canadian semifinal affair at the Stuttgart Open. The NextGen Canadian will play in his third final of the year, after a standout year on tour yielded two final appearances in Rio and Lyon.

The 18-year-old is also playing in his first tournament since losing the Lyon final which forced him to miss the French Open due to a left adductor injury. Perhaps the surprising stat of Auger-Aliassime’s embryonic tennis career is that he had never played a professional match on grass prior to the Mercedes Cup.

After knocking out Ernests Gublis and Gilles Simon in straight sets, he saved a match-point in his quarterfinal win against Dustin Brown. The Canadian sensation improved to 20-11 for the season following his victory over the German, with his notable results coming in Rio, Miami and Lyon. Auger-Aliassime started the year outside the top-100, and he is currently at career-high ranking of No.21. But will he put the seal on a perfect week with his maiden ATP tour-level title?

Berrettini Out To Spoil The Party

Matteo Berrettini had never reached a semifinal on a tour-level tournament on grass before this week. Yet, if you watched him play this week you would barely believe that stat. The Italian has put on a clinic in every match and quite remarkably he has not been broken (held all 39 of his service games) all week. He knocked home hopeful Jan-Lennard Struff to progress to his third final of 2019 and his first of his career on grass.

The Italian has captured one title this year (Budapest) and lost the second final in Germany at the BMW Open a couple of months ago. Berrettini will attempt to win the title without dropping serve all week in a manner reminiscent to his first title win Gstaad last year.

The 23-year-old has disposed off the likes of Karen Khachanov, Nick Kyrgios, Denis Kudla and Jan-Lennard Struff without dropping a serve or set all week. Prior to this year, Berrettini’s only previous main draw win of a grass tournament was at the 2018 Wimbledon championships when he beat Jack Sock.

Auger-Aliassime v Berrettini Predictions & Tips

Auger-Aliassime has made huge strides this year with a number of eye-catching performances. His rise in the rankings is one of tennis’ great stories in 2019. Berrettini is serving machine and it is fair to say breaks will be at a premium in this one. The Canadian will need to be very patient to conjure up break point chances, but he should succeed in the end. This will the Italian’s toughest assignment of the week and he will come up short.

Tip: Auger-Aliassime to win: 7/4 (888Sport)
