Svitolina Seeking Some Big Wins
Svitolina’s season so far has been quite uneventful by her standards. While she has been a part of the top 10, the current WTA Finals champion is yet to find her groove.
She started the year on a consistent note with back to back semifinal appearances in big events like WTA Doha, Dubai, and Indian Wells. However, she never quite managed to go the distance and on clay, her form deteriorated further.
In the three clay events she played in, Svitolina managed to win just of them, both of them coming in Paris. In the French Open, she made it as far as the third round before falling to Garbine Muguruza.
Things are likely to get trickier for Svitolina, seeing that playing on grass is not her forte. Her win-loss record on this surface is the worst among all at 10-12. At the same time, she starting against an opponent in Birmingham who has been out of sorts herself.
Gasparyan Out to Make a Mark
The 24-year-old Russian, who won the Tashkent Open last season, has had a pretty dull year. With the sole exception of her semifinal run in Istanbul, Gasparyan hasn’t really had a run that could propel her to glory.
Her last event was in Paris where she fell to Anna Blinkova in the opener. As for the rest of the events this year, she spent most of her trying in futile attempts to move past the opening rounds.
Svitolina v Gasparyan Prediction and Tips
Svitolina has got herself a relatively easy opener in the Nature Valley Classic in Birmingham but she cannot afford to take this lightly. She has been out of the form of late and that is something Gasparyan can capitalize on. Expect this one to be a tricky affair for the Ukranian, one that can very well go to three sets.
