Roger Federer v Pierre-Hugues Herbert Head to Head
This is the first time the two players are meeting on the ATP circuit.
Another Halle Final For Federer on the Line
Roger Federer is in search of his 10th title at Halle, aiming to only become the second player after Rafael Nadal to win any tournament ten times or more.
Federer’s already challenging campaign here at Halle, faced a spirited performance from Spanish counter-puncher Roberto Bautista Agut. Federer was pushed by the Spaniard after a routine first set, and in the end his experience and variety saw him through 6-4 in the final set.
The Swiss world number three improved his all-time record at Halle to 66-7 with this win and his 15th semifinal appearance at the venue. Federer has had a promising year thus far, with victories at the Dubai Open (ATP 500) and Miami Open (ATP 1000), as well as encouraging performances on clay after a three year break from the surface.
The Swiss maestro has not yet looked at his best on his favorite surface, and some of it could be alluded to the adjustment from clay, where he played the French Open and two ATP Masters 1000, after a break from clay for close to three years.
Federer’s next opponent is Frenchman Pierre-Hugues Herbert. Federer and the Frenchman were hitting partners when Hugues-Herbert was still a junior and they have trained together in Switzerland.
Hebert In Midst of Best Year In Singles
Pierre-Hugues Herbert has been successful on the doubles circuit winning the career Grand Slam this year at the Australian Open with veteran Frenchman Nicolas Mahut. Since then, Herbert has focussed on his singles game and was ranked as high as number 36 in the world this February. He is currently ranked number 49.
He has been an ATP singles finalist on three occasions and is yet to win his first title. He was a finalist at Montpellier earlier this year, losing to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the final. He has been a regular member of the French Davis Cup team as well.
Herbert has an interesting game compared to Federer’s recent opponents. He takes the ball early, makes large cuts and slices at the ball, taking time away from the opponent, and plays from the net plenty as well.
He has had some encouraging wins this week at Halle, against Gael Monfils and Sergio Stekhovsky. He came up against an unfit Borna Coric, who withdrew after the first set, playing through evident discomfort..
Federer v Herbert Predictions & Tips
Herbert has been a successful doubles player, and this is a rare occasion of Federer playing someone with a stronger volley than his own. The Frenchman is playing the best singles game of his life, and has a well suited grass court game.
But, he is up against one of the all-time greats at a venue, where he has nine titles. Herbert will possibly put up a spirited performance, but Federer will have too much variety for his one-time hitting partner on grass. Except Federer to win in straight sets.
Tip: Over 20.5 games in the match: 10/11 (888Sport)
