Alexander Zverev v Jiri Vesely Head to Head

Zverev and Vesely have no previous history. This will be a first meeting between the pair.

Time To Step Up For Young Zverev

When it comes to Grand Slam matches, Alexander Zverev has consistently struggled to make a major impact over the last few seasons. But this year, he has been operating at a surprisingly low level outside the Majors as well.

Heading to the grass court season in 2018, Zverev had won 34 matches and secured two ATP titles (one at the Madrid Open) and had notched four top 10 wins. This year has been a complete contrast to those excellent results. The German won the lowly 250 event in Geneva prior to the French Open (his only title in 2019) and he has not registered a single top 10 win so far.

Despite a career best season in 2018 when he reached his maiden Grand Slam quarterfinal at Roland Garros, it is fair to say he has regressed badly this year. He is certainly playing badly than what his ranking suggests. An opening round defeat at the Mercedes Cup to Dustin Brown –  a player who had won just one tour-level match all-season – was another low and terrible start to his grass court season.

Despite his latest defeat to David Goffin in Halle, Zverev does possess an offensive and dangerous game on grass. But can he put behind his lack of progress and make a winning start to his Wimbledon campaign?

Qualifier Vesely Out To Spring A Surprise

Jiri Vesely is a big-hitting left hander with a fairly impressive serve and forehand. Vesely has won a single ATP tour-level title in Auckland in 2015 and lost in his only other final that same year to Guillermo Garcia Lopez in Romania.

The 25-year-old has been an ever-present on Challenger tour where he has won 6 titles and in 2019 his results have been largely undistinguished. The Czech reached the quarterfinal in Marrakech before withdrawing hurt and his only other notable achievement in 2019 was in reaching the semifinals of the Challenger event in Canberra in January.

Vesely though has had two decent runs on the lawns of SW19 having reached the fourth round in 2016 and 2018.

Zverev v Vesely Predictions & Tips

Vesely has gone through three qualifying matches without dropping a set. When his serve and forehand are firing he can be incredibly difficult to play against especially on the faster courts. Zverev is a strong favorite here but I doubt this will be as comfortable as many would think.

Tip: Over 36.5 games in the match: 1/1 (888Sport)
