Kei Nishikori v Thiago Monteiro Head to Head

Nishikori and Monteiro have no previous history. This will be a first meeting between the pair.

Nishikori Aims To Surpass Last Year’s Quarterfinal Appearance

Kei Nishikori made his third quarterfinal appearance of his career at Roland Garros before falling in straight sets to Rafael Nadal, the eventual champion. The Japanese No.1 admitted that he took a precautionary rest in the build-up to Wimbledon by withdrawing from Halle to enable an inflammation in his right arm subside.

Nishikori had been worn out after expending so much energy in his road to the last four in Paris.  He played two incredibly grueling back-to-back five-setters, one of which extended over two days. Much like last year, Nishikori is attempting to limit his schedule to the most important tournaments only.

He played Halle in 2018 courtesy of an early defeat at Roland Garros. The 29-year-old went on to reach the Wimbledon quarterfinals for the first time in his career before losing out to Novak Djokovic in four sets. That was the best run he put together at SW19 in his last five visits. That result also ensured the Japanese’s marked consistency was pretty evident as he has now made at least the last four in each of the four Grand Slams.

Nishikori though is notorious for making things very difficult for himself. Could he be a victim of an opening round loss to Brazilian qualifier Monteiro?

Monteiro Came Through Qualifying

Brazilian Thiago Monteiro will play in the main-draw at the Wimbledon Championships for just the second time in his career. Monteiro who reached the second round in his previous main-draw appearance in 2017 came through three qualifying matches to book a date against Japan’s No.1 player.

The Brazilian won his first Grand Slam match at the French Open in 2017 and he has never made past the second round of any of the four major tournaments.

Monteiro climbed over 300 spots in the rankings between 2015 and 2016 after showing so much promise in his early stages of his career and hit a career-high ranking of No.74 in 2017. He has since slipped to outside the top-100 as a result of injuries and inconsistency.

The 25-year-old has won a mere two main-draw matches in 2019.

Nishikori v Monteiro Predictions & Tips

Nishikori is playing against a man in terrible run of form and it would be a real shock if this is even a contest. But knowing the Japanese so well over the years, he can make a pretty straight forward draw hard for himself. There is nothing however, to suggest Monteiro can counter-punch Nishikori’s clever baseline game and the 29-year-old former US Open finalist should be too solid to get the job done in straight sets.

Tip: Nishikori to win in straight sets: 4/9 (888Sport)
