Karen Khachanov v Feliciano Lopez Head to Head

The two men have played twice before, both on Kachanov’s favourite hard courts, and he has won on each occasion. Their first meeting was a straight sets win in Chengdu, China, in 2016, whilst their more recent encounter came at the Indian Wells Masters in March this year, with Khachanov clinching a three set win.

Khachanov, Made to Battle in His First Round

Khachanov who came into Wimbledon off the back of his maiden Gram Slam quarter-final appearance at Roland Garros, made heavy weather of beating Kwon Soon Woo of South Korea in his first round match on Monday, a man currently 115 places lower than him in the ATP World rankings.

He won the first set on a tie break and then took the second, before allowing his opponent to hit back and take the third. The fourth set was also a close affair, with the pair trading breaks, until finally Khachanov nosed ahead, and closed out the match.

It was, however, a much tighter match than he would have wanted, and it was his superior service that helped him get through it in the end.

Lopez Double Queen’s Club Championship

By contrast, 37-year-old Lopez cruised into the second round, disposing of the American qualifier Marcos Giron in straight sets with the minimum of fuss. Key to his dominance was his serve – he produced 16 aces, and won 95% of all points on his first serve.

Lopez comes into this tournament buoyed by his success at the Queen’s Club Championships, where he ended as a double champion, claiming his second singles win there by beating Gilles Simon in the final, and then pairing up with Andy Murray to take the doubles’ crown as well.

Prior to that event he had only won three singes matches all year, but the Spanish veteran has a good record at Wimbledon – he has been a quarter-finalist here three times before.

Khachanov v Lopez Predictions & Tips

Khachanov will starts the odds-on favourite to win the match at 14/19 with Lopez priced at 5/4. However, Lopez is a proven grass court player and in good form on the surface, and this has all the ingredients of an upset, provided the Spaniard, at 37, has the necessary stamina.

Tip: Lopez to win in four sets: 7/2 (888Sport)
