Karen Khachanov v Feliciano Lopez Head to Head
The two men have played five times before. The pair have played each other five times before, with the Spaniard currently leading their head-to-head series by three matches to two. Khachanov has won their two meetings on clay – in the Barcelona Open three years ago, and at the Rome Masters this May – but Bautista-Agut has won their two encounters on hard courts, in Dubai in 2017, and at the Australian Open earlier this year.
Crucially, at least as far as the bookmakers are concerned, the Spanish player has won their only previous match on grass – the Halle Open quarter-final last year.
Khachanov, Beat Grass Court Specialist Lopez to Progress
Khachanov survived a tough opening round encounter with South Korea’s Kwon Soon Woo, dropping a set to the man ranked 115 places below him in the world to progress to the second round.
He faced an even tougher test there in the shape of grass-court specialist, Feliciano Lopez, with the Spaniard coming into the tournament buoyed by success at the Queen’s Club Championship, where he had won not only his second singles title there but also the doubles with Andy Murray.
And all seemed to be going according to the script when Lopez took the first set. However, Khachanov had other ideas and fought back to take the next three sets and make his way to the third round for the third successive year. Out-served by Lopez, who produced almost twice as many aces, it was his superior ability on the return that eventually helped him prevail, and his greater conversion rate when it came to break points.
However, having got here he is now the highest-ranked player born in the 1990s left in the men’s draw after his much-heralded contemporaries like Dominic Thiem, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Alexander Zverev have all exited the tournament early. He made his maiden Grand Slam quarter-final appearance at Roland Garros last month and has a great opportunity to add a second to his CV.
Bautista-Agut, Easy Passage to Third Round
31-year-old Spaniard Bautista-Agut has enjoyed an easy passage through to the third round. He began his campaign in South London with a match on Monday against Peter Gojowckyk, and beat the German in straight sets, dropping just eight games in the process. He was scarcely tested more by his second-round opponent, Steve Darcis of Belgium, who he was dominating and leading by two sets to love before injury forced his opponent to retire in the third set.
A quarter-finalist in Melbourne this year, he has twice made the fourth round at Wimbledon in previous years, and will rate his chances of doing so again highly.
Khachanov v Bautista-Agut Predictions & Tips
Despite being the lower ranked player, Bautista-Agut is the odds-on favourite for this match at 8/13, whilst Khachanov is priced at 27/20. The bookmakers are perhaps swayed by the fact that the Spaniard won their only meeting on grass, and also beat the Russian on his way to the Melbourne quarter-final in January. Despite this, we tip the Russian to upset the odds and keep the flag flying for the “next generation” at Wimbledon.
