Simona Halep v Cori Gauff Head to Head
This is the first meeting between Halep and the 15-year-old American on the tour.
Gauff, Creating History in London
Cori Gauff became the youngest player in the history to qualify for the main draw in a Grand Slam, courtesy of her sensational run in the qualifying rounds at the SW19. She has been absolutely sensational so far and despite the outcome in this match against Halep, she is set to walk away with a million fans and a substantial boost in the rankings.
She was given a wildcard into the qualifiers, thanks to her winning run in the French Open juniors just a few weeks back. It was then that she first rose to prominence by defeating the number one seed Aliona Bolsova. Thereafter, it was an easy run for her as she dispatched the remaining two qualifiers with ease.
In the main draw, she started her run with Venus Williams, one of her favourite players on the tour. Defeating her 6-4, 6-4, she then met Magdalena Rybarikova. Unlike other players who succumb to the pressure or to prove to be a one-time hit, Gauff carried on and continued to perform with finesse and maturity.
In the third round, she ran into some difficulties against Polona Hercog but staged a sensational comeback to win the match. Ultimately, she sailed to the victory with 3-6, 7-6(7), 7-5.
Halep, Sailing High on Confidence
Halep is heading into this fixture after defeating Victoria Azarenka 6-3, 6-1, in just an hour and seven minutes. That was a good recovery, following her three-set affair against Mihaela Buzarnescu.
The Romanian has had a rather average season so far, reaching two singles final on the tour – the Madrid Open and WTA Doha. The number 7 seed also reached the penultimate rounds in a few other events. However, she went down in the rankings owing to an increasingly competitive landscape and a lack of showing in big events.
She also experimented with coaching early in the season before deciding on a permanent hitting partner for the time being.
Halep v Gauff Predictions & Tips
On paper, Halep will start as the overwhelming favourite. However, Gauff has been nothing but brilliant till now, especially given her age. Furthermore, the Romanian isn’t the most immune player on the tour and has had her share of falling to the underdogs, the inexperienced players. However, I feel that this is where Gauff’s dream run will come to an end, simply because Halep is an entirely different player in comparison to the opponents she has faced.
We can expect three sets in the match with Halep expected to win in the match.
