Maria Sharapova v Anett Kontaveit Head to Head
Sharapova holds a 1-0 lead over Kontaveit, beating her in the 2017 WTA Stuttgart in straight set at a time when the Russian was in a prime form.
An Injury-Stricken Season for Sharapova
Sharapova, one of the most prolific players of the sport, has had a season to forget so far. Aiming to reach her first final since the 2017 Tianjin Open, the Russian has spent most of her time off the courts this year. The main reason for this is her lingering shoulder injury.
Starting her season in Shenzhen, Sharapova showed a great deal of promise by reaching the quarterfinal there and later, making it to the fourth round in the Australian Open. But after that, things took a turn as the 32-year-old was compelled to take a break and focus on recovering from her injury.
She returned to action in Mallorca after a hiatus of more than four months. She lost in the second round there and subsequently, withdrew from her opening round match at the Wimbledon, despite being a set up.
Kontaveit Looking to Cause Waves
Kontaveit has had a pretty decent season so far in comparison to Sharapova’s. With a win-loss tally of 19-14, she has done enough to stay in the top 20 although, there is still a massive room for improvement.
She had a scintillating run at the start of the season when she reached the semifinal in Miami and the final in Stuttgart, defeating Victoria Azarenka and Naomi Osaka in the process. Clearly, the Estonian is not at all hesitant when it comes to putting up a domineering performance against the big guns.
Most recently, she played in the Wimbledon where she fell to Karolina Muchova in the third round. The 23-year-old made a name for herself last season in the Wuhan Open when she reached her Premier 5 final.
Sharapova v Kontaveit Prediction & Tips
On paper, Kontaveit will start as the favourite simply because she is in a better form and statistically speaking, she has more playing time this season. But Sharapova is a player who can easily find her groove – all she needs is the will. She has a series of stunning feats to her name and there is no reason why she cannot start here with a win. All in all, we have a pretty exciting game on our hands.
Tip: Over 16.5 games in the match. (888Sport)
