Rafael Nadal v Fabio Fognini Head to Head

The pair have played each other no less than 15 times before, with Nadal leading their head to head series by eleven matches to four.  All but one of those Fognini victories, including his most recent win in the Monte Carlo semi-final this year, have come on clay, whereas Nadal has a clear edge on hard courts like Montreal.

Nadal Passes Federer Masters’ Record

Nadal’s victory over Guido Pella on Thursday night was his 379th in Masters 1000 events and took him past Roger Federer’s record in such events.

The defending champion, and four-time previous winner in Montreal, is playing his first event since losing in the semi-finals of Wimbledon to his arch rival Federer, and so far he has progressed with little difficulty this week.

The challenge of Dan Evans of Great Britain was brushed aside in the first round, and Pella was equally easily beaten in an hour and forty one minutes on Thursday. A solitary break of serve was enough to take the first set, and Nadal broke again early in the second. Pella hit back with a break of his own, but Nadal soon took control of proceedings again to close out the match.

Already fourth on the all-time list in terms of ATP tournaments won, Nadal is chasing his 83rd senior career title this week, as he prepares himself for the US Open, which he will be looking to win for the fourth time.

Fognini, Second Masters Quarter-Final of 2019

This is Fognini’s second Masters Quarter-Final of 2019, and follows up his performance in Monte Carlo, where he enjoyed the biggest win of his professional career, becoming the first Italian to clinch victory in a Masters event. The fact that he beat Nadal in the semi-final made that triumph all the sweeter.

Based on that, and his fourth round appearance at Roland Garros, Fognini entered the world’s top ten for the first time, but his form has slumped since Wimbledon where he was fined for his comment that the whole venue should be blown up.

He was poor in Hamburg, retired from his second round match in Umag, Croatia, and failed to defend his title in Los Cabos, Mexico last week, beaten by Taylor Fritz in the last eight.

However, he has managed to find some semblance of form this week, defeating Tommy Paul of the USA in straight sets on Wednesday, and repeating that feat against the experienced French player Adrian Mannarino on Thursday to set up the match with Nadal.

Nadal v Fognini Predictions & Tips

Nadal is the overwhelming favourite to win this match at 7/50, whilst Fognini is priced at 19/4. Whilst Fognini is capable of beating the Spaniard, that is much more likely to happen on a clay court than a hard surface like Montreal. Expect instead for Nadal to win his 380th Masters 1000 match.

Tip: Nadal to win in straight sets: 5/8 (888Sport)
