Dominic Thiem v Daniil Medvedev Head to Head

The two players have twice on the ATP circuit, with the Austrian Thiem winning on both occasions. Thiem won a close encounter in St Petersburg in 2018 on a indoor hard court, and secured a convincing 6-4,6-0 victory in the Barcelona Open final earlier this year on clay.

Thiem Looking For Deep Run To Kickstart US Hard Court Season

The Austrian world number four had a strong clay court season, winning the Barcelona ATP 500 and was a finalist at the French Open, after an epic semifinal victory against world number one Novak Djokovic. He also won his first ATP Masters 1000 earlier this year, on the hard courts of Indian Wells.

After a disappointing Wimbledon, Thiem looked sharp upon his return to clay last month winning his first home title at Kitzbuhel in Austria.

Thiem’s US hard court season has been off to a good start thus far in Montreal, with a close three set win against rising Canadian sensation Denis Shapovalov, followed by a convincing straight sets win against former US Open winner Marin Cilic.

The courts at Montreal are playing a little slower, and that can be expected to work to the Austrian’s advantage.

Medvedev Looking for First Win Against Thiem

Russian Daniil Medvedev was among the most consistent players in the early part of the season and at one point had the best record for the year on the tour.

A mix of poor form and fatigue saw him drop in the rankings during the clay court season. He has however, returned to form in recent weeks breaking into the top ten of the ATP rankings for the first time in his career.

Medvedev comes to Montreal after a successful week at the Citi Open in Washington D.C., losing the final to Aussie Nick Kyrgios, in two tiebreaks, after not dropping a set prior to the finals.

His Montreal campaign has looked strong thus far, with victories against Kyle Edmund and Cristian Garin in straight sets.

Dominic Thiem v Daniil Medvedev Predictions & Tips

This promises to be one of the more closely fought quarter-finals in the current lineup. Both players have been in good form, and will believe that the slower hard court works to their advantage, perhaps Thiem a little more so than Medvedev.

With the Cincinnati Masters remaining after this week, prior to the US Open, both players will like a deep run here in Montreal to give a huge boost to their August hard court campaigns.

A very close match on the cards, where it is difficult to pick a favorite. Expect a close three-setter, with Thiem inching past his Russian opponent, to make the Rogers Cup semifinals.

Tip: Thiem to win in three sets: 19/5 (888Sport)
