Roberto Bautista-Agut v Hubert Hurkacz Head to Head

Having never played each other before this, the Spaniard and Pole will go head to head against each other for the first time at the Cincinnati Masters.

No Turnaround for In-Form Bautista-Agut

At the time of writing, Bautista-Agut is still awaiting to feature in his quarter-final at the Rogers Cup, having made it through to that round with back to back straight-set wins over his opponents. And a win here against Gael Monfils will put him into the semi-final against Rafael Nadal.

Whatever the result of the encounter, Bautista-Agut is currently at his best career ranking of 13 and when the new rankings come out next week, he would have climbed further up the ladder. That should come as no surprise given his run to the Wimbledon semi-final, his best ever Grand Slam appearance so far.

While he lost to Novak Djokovic in the semis at the Wimbledon, wins over Karen Khachanov, Benoit Paire and Guido Pella would have given him a lot of confidence. It also translates into an over win-loss record of 33-14 this season which is a far cry better than the overall 35-21 last season.

The flip side to this is he wouldn’t have much of a turnaround time given his ranking doesn’t allow him a bye into the second round at Cincinnati; so a win over Monfils makes it back to back matches on Saturday followed by a possible final or travel to Cincinnati and a first round on Monday.

Dangerous Hurkacz Could Test Opponent

While he’s ranked 68th in the world and has a career-best ranking of 61st, Kurkacz has had his moments. On the hard courts of Indian Wells earlier this year, he made it as far as the quarter-final where he lost to Roger Federer but before that there were some remarkable wins.

Hurkacz defeated Lucas Pouille, Kei Nishikori and Denis Shapovalov in that tournament and he comes across as a player who cannot be given an inch – you give him that as an opponent, he will take advantage of that. And his ‘inch’ here could come in the form of Bautista-Agut’s turnaround time as mentioned above.

Can he upset the current world number 13 and set up a possible meeting with Gael Monfils, the player Bautista-Agut is currently facing at the Rogers Cup quarter-final?

Bautista-Agut v Hurkacz Predictions & Tips

On paper, Roberto Bautista-Agut is a heavy favourite but he will need to exhibit solid fitness to get the better of Hurkacz and go further into this tournament. Hard court is the Pole’s favourite surface too which makes this even tougher to call and we will go with three sets in this match.

Tip: Three sets in the match: 7/4 (888Sport)
