Alexander Zverev v Radu Albot Head to Head

The pair have never played before. This will be the first meeting between the 22-year old German, and the Moldovan who is nine years his senior.

Zverev, Disappointing 2019 So Far

It would be fair to say that 2019 so far has not gone exactly as Zverev had planned. Coming into the year off the back of his triumph in the ATP Finals in London last November, he was hotly tipped as the man most likely to break-up the stranglehold of the “big three” when it came to Grand Slams.

Yet he has largely failed to justify that promise, and has slipped down the world rankings from three to six. There have been some highs – he won his 11th ATP title in Geneva in May, and lost to Nick Kyrgios in the final in Acapulco. But they have been interspersed with some real lows, with the 22 year old suffering too many exits from tournaments at the hands of players he would normally be expected to beat.

This will be his fifth time in the main draw in New York, and his fourth round appearance last year is the best he has managed in this event so far. This would be a good time to improve on that, and perhaps salvage something from the season after all.

Albot, First Moldovan to Win ATP Title

Earlier this year, Albot made his own personal piece of history when he became the first Moldovan player to win a senior ATP singles title when he beat Dan Evans of Great Britain in the final at Delray Beach, putting the cup he won in his trophy cabinet alongside the doubles crown he clinched with Dusan Lajovic in Istanbul in 2015.

2019, in fact, has been his best year on tour since he turned pro in 2008. He reached the semi-final in Montpellier, before going down to the eventual winner Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, and did the same in Geneva and Los Cabos.

He is now close to his highest ever world ranking, having already won more matches so far this year than in any other previous calendar 12 months. He has a poor record in majors, however, with a third round here in 2017, and in Wimbledon in 2018 highlights in a history that contains many more first round defeats than wins.

Zverev v Albot Predictions & Tips

Zverev is the odds-on favourite to win this match at 4/13, whilst Albot is priced at 3/1. The German has had a disappointing year by his own high standards, but a good run at the US Open would be a way to partially redeem his season at least, and he should be able to deal with the challenge of Albot with relative ease.

Tip:  Zverev to win in straight sets: 5/4 (888Sport)
