Elina Svitolina v Whitney Osuigwe Head to Head

The two ladies have never met before on the WTA Tour.

Svitolina, in with a Decent Spell

World No. 5 Elina Svitolina arrived in New York after a rather shaky run in the US Open Series. Playing in San Jose, Rogers Cup, and the Cincinnati Open most recently, she never moved past the quarterfinal round.

In Toronto and Cincinnati particularly, she fell to Sofia Kenin with an eerily similar scoreline, making the American one of the few players who have trumped Svitolina on multiple instances.

At the same time, however, the current WTA Finals champion had a breakthrough run in Wimbledon, where she reached the semifinal. That was her first such run in a Grand Slam and that kind of confidence can very well propel her to similar heights at the Flushing Meadows too.

Svitolina is still seeking her first singles title of the season although, she has been in a good form on the whole and has done well to be a part of the top 10. With penultimate round runs in big events like Doha, Dubai, and Indian Wells, she never really had a problem with her form, per se.

Osuigwe, with a Wildcard Entry

The 17-year-old American Whitney Osuigwe is looking to join the league of Amanda Anisimova and Cori Gauff – the teenage prodigies who have caused a sensation on the WTA Tour.

Focussing primarily on the ITF circuit, she has been building her form in the shadows, bit by bit. Currently ranked in early 100s, her best run of the season on the WTA circuit came in Miami, where she reached the second round. In the two previous Grand Slams, she fell right in the qualifiers.

As a junior player, Osuigwe won the French Open in 2017.

Svitolina v Osuigwe Predictions & Tips

While Svitolina has shown a proclivity to succumb to the lowly-ranked players, it is quite unlikely that she will fall to the 17-year-old American. She clearly has the experience and momentum needed to defeat Osuigwe and reach the second round comfortably. This match will be a good exposure and learning curve for the underdog. The only thing that Svitolina may need to keep in mind is not get irked by the fact that her fixture has been pushed to Court 17.

Tip:  Under 18.5 games in the match: 23/25 (888Sport)
