According to a USTA announcement, Raonic will now be replaced by lucky loser, and Poland’s Kamil Majchrzak, who went down to Ilya Ivashka in the final round of the US Open qualifiers.

Raonic’s first round match was scheduled for Monday against Nicholas Jarry but he will now hope to get back to full health in the lead-up to the season ending. He had last featured at the Rogers Cup back home but another glute injury had led to his withdrawal from his match against Felix Auger-Aliassime.

There was a back trouble at the Stuttgart Open earlier as well, which forced Raonic to withdraw from that tournament before his semi-final; Auger-Aliassime the beneficiary again.

The Canadian’s best result this season came at the Indian Wells Masters where he made the semi-final before losing to Dominic Thiem. He had earlier begun the year well with a quarter-final appearance at the Australian Open but since then his results and fitness have been a cause for concern.

Majchrzak, his replacement, was a junior US Open winner in 2013, and has played mostly at the Challenger level. His best result this year was a win in the first round at the Atlanta Open but other than that, he’s yet to reach the second round of any ATP events this year.
