12th seeded Borna Coric withdrew from the 2019 US Open because of a lower back strain that allowed Grigor Dimitrov to advance to the third round on Wednesday.

Coric, who had earlier defeated Evgeny Donskoy in his first round encounter in three straightforward sets, complained of his back injury and had to therefore withdraw from the tournament. This allowed Dimitrov just his third entry into the third round at the US Open after 2014 and 2016.

Dimitrov has fallen off the rails in recent times with form issues, after a lot had been expected out of him following a solid 2017. He had won the Cincinnati Masters that year and followed it up with a title triumph at the ATP World Tour Finals.

However, a string of under-par results including first round defeats at the 2018 and 2019 Wimbledon and 2018 US Open have left Dimitrov struggling to exhibit any kind of consistency.

Coric himself is currently ranked 12th in the world, his career-best ranking, but hasn’t had the best time this year. He had crashed out in round one at Umag, second round at the Montreal Masters, and the opener Cincinnati before this competition.

Dimitrov will now take on the winner of the match between Pablo Cuevas and Kamil Majchrzak.
