Novak Djokovic v Dennis Kudla Head to Head

The pair have played each other once before, less than two months ago on the grass of Wimbledon, with Djokovic winning easily in straight sets.

Djokovic, Could Injury Derail His Title Bid?

Defending champion and pre-tournament favourite Djokovic was one of the few players whose matches were scheduled early enough to beat the New York rain on Wednesday.

However, although he won his second round match against Argentine Juan Ignacio Londero in straight sets, the man who has won four out of the last five Grand Slams gave unexpected hope to his main rivals for the title at Flushing Meadows by needing three injury breaks to deal with a shoulder problem which affected both his serve and his backhand.

That contributed to him dropping his serve five times in the match, and although he always had enough in reserve to defeat that particular opponent, it does raise questions about how he will be able to cope with some of the tougher challenges to come later in the event.

He will be happy that a day’s rest and physiotherapy gives him the chance to get back into shape for his match with Kudla.

Kudla Punching Above His Weight in New York

For the Ukrainian born American, and world number 111, reaching the third round here is a personal landmark, being the first time that the 27-year-old has managed a third round place in his home Grand Slam, going one better than last year.

His form coming into Flushing Meadows was poor – after losing to Djokovic in the second round at Wimbledon, he then exited his next three events at the first time of asking. However, he overcame Serbia’s Janko Tpsarevic in the first round, who was playing on his last Grand Slam before retiring, in four sets, securing a second round tie against another Serb, Dusan Lajovic, winner in Umag, and the beaten finalist in Monte Carlo.  And again he came through in four sets against the number 27 seed, and a man ranked 84 places higher than high.

Incredibly, he is now scheduled to meet a third Serb in a row, but this time one of a different calibre than either Tpsarevic or Lajovic.

Djokovic v Kudla Predictions & Tips

Djokovic is the overwhelming favourite to beat the man who he overcame in straight sets in their only previous meeting just two months ago. He is 1/14 whilst Kudla is 10/1. The American has made a habit so far this week, of knocking Serbian players out of the tournament, but this time, provided that Djokovic’s shoulder holds up, is very likely to be third time unlucky for Kudla.

Tip: Djokovic to win in three sets: 2/5 (888Sport)
