Jelena Ostapenko v Kristie Ahn Head to Head

Ostapenko and Ahn have met once and it was thrilling encounter at the Claro Open in Bogota in April this year. The American was a lucky loser in the event and she saved two match-points to earn a big victory over Ostapenko who was the number 1 seed in the tournament.

In The Midst Of An Error-Strewn Display, Ostapenko Finds Reprieve

Jelena Ostapenko beat in-form American and Garbine Muguruza’s conqueror Alison Riske 6-4 6-3 on Grandstand Court on Thursday to equal her best ever showing at the US Open. On any day, that may sound as a routine scoreline but there was more into it to suggest the Latvian played a shocker and it more than justifies that Riske was even worse.

Ostapenko hit a whopping 17 double faults and 53 unforced errors. Seven of Ostapenko’s 17 double faults came in the very first game of the match. That is a stat you would barely associate with a winning player and more so in a straight sets victory. Although the 22-year-old fired 25 winners from her racket which did most of the damage, she is vulnerable to another upset on Saturday.

The big hitting Latvian snapped a three-match losing streak at the Rogers Cup when she beat Caroline Garcia in the first round. Eventually, she would make the round of 16 in Canada, but her form has been abysmal. In Cincinnati, she lost to Yulia Putintseva in the first round (one of many first round exits she has suffered in 2019).

Ahn Knows What It Takes To Beat Ostapenko

Kristie Ahn and Jelena Ostapenko played out one of the matches of the year when they battled out for two and half hours in their epic first round meeting at the Claro Open in Bogota in the first quarter of 2019.

Ahn fought back from a 6-4, 4-2 deficit and fended off two match-points to win the contest 4-6, 7-6, 7-5. She was ranked just outside the Top 200 at the time and she has since worked her way into the world’s top-150 (currently ranked 141).

The story of Kristie Ahn and the US Open comes a long way back. Ahn made her main draw appearance at Flushing Meadows in 2008, but never appeared at her hometown tournament until this year when she won the US Open Wild Card Challenge courtesy of her quarterfinal appearance at the Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic.

It looks like the US Open officials made a good decision after all, as Ahn stunned 2004 US Open champion and recent finalist in Cincinnati Svetlana Kuznetsova in the first round to earn her maiden main-draw victory at her home Slam, 11 years after making her debut.

Ahn followed than impressive win with another upset of Anna Kalinskaya (the woman who beat Sloane Stephens).

Ostapenko v Ahn Predictions & Tips

This has an upset written all over it. Ostapenko is just too inconsistent to be trusted to deliver a result. And given that she starts as a massive favorite makes this good value to back Ahn for the win.
