Andrey Rublev v Nick Kyrgios Head to Head

The two players have met once on the tour last year on the indoor hard courts in Moscow with Kyrgios winning in three sets.

On Comeback Trail, Rublev Looking At Week Two Of Major

21-year-old hard hitting Russian Andrey Rublev had a breakthrough year in 2017, winning his first ATP title at the Croatia Open, qualifying for the US Open quarter-finals and being a finalist at the Next Generation ATP finals in Milan.

Rublev reached a career-high ranking of 31 in early 2018. However, a back injury saw him out of action for most of 2018 and his return to the tour was challenging. He was ranked number 70th in the world after Wimbledon this year.

The Russian has had a good run since, making the finals at the Hamburg ATP 500, defeating Dominic Thiem. He followed it with a semi-final performance at the ATP Masters 1000 in Cincinnati, defeating Stanislas Wawrinka and Roger Federer, before losing in the semi-finals to Daniil Medvedev. He is now ranked within the top 40 in the world.

An offensive baseliner with a big forehand, and a consistent backhand, Rublev has been deploying his running forehand that can be particularly lethal.

Rublev got his US Open off to a promising start defeating fellow rising young star Stefanos Tsitsipas in a hard fought four set encounter.

Can Kyrgios Keep Focus On Court?

Aussie Nick Kyrgios has had two straight set wins thus far and is scheduled for Arthur Ashe stadium during the night session on Labor Day Saturday. While this should be the primary item that Kyrgios is making news for, he has been the center of attention for a host of other things, ranging from comments made during his round one match to the umpire, comments in his post-match press conference about the ATP and his exchange with the umpire in his second round about the collar of his shirt.

Kyrgios has had a typical Kyrgios season, where he has won two titles, at Acapulco and Washington D.C., and looked in prime form, whereas he has had tournaments and matches with disappointing losses and temper issues.

That in a nutshell defines Nick Kyrgios; oodles of talent, but it is all about the Kyrgios that turns up on any given day.

The Aussie has looked to be in very good form and shown moments of immense focus, and with Dominic Thiem, Roberto Bautista Agut, and Stefanos Tsitsipas making early departures, Kyrgios’ section of the draw is wide open. A focused showing this week and next could see him make a very deep run here at the US Open.

Andrey Rublev v Nick Kyrgios Predictions & Tips

This promises to be a very exciting encounter between two unorthodox talented young players.

Rublev has looked very strong on his comeback trail with some top level victories in the last four to six weeks. His game suits the conditions here, as we have seen in 2017, and he will be raring to get another shot at the second week of the Open.

While Kyrgios has every shot in the book to match the best there is, it really depends on which version of the Aussie shows up.

It is the big stage, it is Arthur Ashe stadium primetime at the US Open; this is what Kyrgios lives for and we can expect a four set win for the Aussie in a match with tennis of some of the highest quality.

Tip: Kyrgios to win in four sets: 2/1 (888Sport)
