Prajnesh Gunneswaran has bowed out of the ATP Jinan Challenger 2019 after losing to Japan’s Go Soeda in three sets.

India’s Gunneswaran, who was the top seed in the event, went down to his seventh seeded opponent, Soeda in three tough sets. Soeda won 7-6, 3-6, 6-3 to enter the semi-final.

Going into the match with a 1-1 head to head record against Soeda, Gunneswaran started as a favourite thanks to his superior ranking; 88th to Soeda’s 155th, but failed to capitalise on his opponent’s mistakes.

The match looked like it was going the distance when the pair was tied 2-2 in the final set but the Japanese player took control of the match after that and ran off to a win.

Gunneswaran had got a first round bye before defeating Renta Tokuda and Tung-lin Wu in his next two matches. Soeda’s wins had come against Goncalo Oliveira and Di Wu, both in straight sets, before his defeat of Gunneswaran.

Soeda will take on Enrique López Pérez in the semi-final.

Earlier this week, Sumit Nagal, another Indian tennis player who sprung to fame following his first round match at the US Open against Federer, went down to Italy’s Giulio Zeppieri in straight sets in the round of 64 at Genoa Challenger.
