Alison van Uytvanck v Kirsten Flipkens Preview:
Belgians Alison van Uytvanck and Kirsten Flipkens will face off in what would be their fifth meeting when they play their second round match here. And all their previous matches have come in the previous four years, starting with the Katowice Open in 2015. Overall, it’s 2-2 on head to head, while on hard court surfaces it’s 1-0 in favour of Flipkens.
And while van Uytvanck has now moved to 63rd in the world to Flipkens’ ranking outside the top 100, it’s tough to pick a winner when both players have had a poor recent record. Van Uytvanck, for instance, went out in the first round at the Vancouver ITF competition and then lost her opener at the New York Open and the second round at the US Open.
Flipkens qualified for the US Open but lost to Bianca Andreescu in round two, after having gone down in Washington earlier. So while van Uytvanck starts off as bookmakers’ favourite at 4/6, we need to look at a possibility of a three-setter in this one given how closely matched they are.

Misaki Doi v Zoe Hives Preview:
This will be the first time that Doi and Hives will be facing off. The experienced Doi had a difficult initiation to the tournament after she lost her first set to the 37-year-old Junri Namigata before rallying to complete the victory and that win came on the back of three successive defeats before that.
Hives, a 22-year-old Aussie, qualified for the tournament with a couple of wins before surprising Anastasia Potapova in the first round, but also in three sets. Hives is ranked 163rd in the world but is on the move up and that is where one might see an advantage with the odds.
The Japanese Doi is 1/2 to win this while Hives starts off at 6/4 and the good money would be to back the Aussie for this one. To make this less risky, Hives to win a set seems a good option too.

Sara Sorribes Tormo v Varvara Flink Preview:
When these two players had met earlier in June this year at the WTA Bol, a $125k tournament, Sara Sorribes Tormo had emerged a straight-set winner over Flink in that round of 16 encounter. Since then, Sorribes Tormo has gone on to win titles at two ITF tournaments on different surfaces but her performances at the slightly higher WTA tournaments haven’t been very fulfilling.
On the other hand Flink made the semi-final at the Rome ITF competition, and qualified for Wimbledon before winning her opener there. But since then there have been opening round defeats at three successive tournaments and a failure to qualify for the US Open for her.
The good news is she defeated Kristina Kucova in the first round in straight sets here and will be raring to have a second shot at Tormo.

Kurumi Nara v Mihaela Buzarnescu Preview:
A match between a 125th-ranked Buzarnescu and 182nd-ranked Nara shouldn’t be too tough to call, Buzarnescu should start a favourite. Not to mention that Nara’s record since the end of the French Open earlier this year consists of just two, second round appearances even at the ITF level.
Life hasn’t been too much better on the circuit for Buzarnescu, with losses piling on at the drop of the hat but at least she has been participating at a higher level than Doi. That said, this could be a lot closer than the odds on offer, what with Buzarnescu at 1/2 and Nara 7/4 to win this. We could see a three-setter.
