Misaki Doi v Nao Hibino Preview:

Not too many would have expected this at the start of the tournament. Sure, six Japanese players featured in the main draw of the WTA Japan Open but for two of them to make the final and that too for both unseeded players to get through till there, is an achievement of sorts.

What’s interesting to note is that before this, only two players from Japan have reached as far as the title-decider before this and in a matter of just one year, that count has doubled. Also curiously, both players are ranked outside the top 100, making these rather stunning odds.

When it comes to their head to head, Doi and Hibino have played each other four times before this and both players have won once apiece. All these four meetings came in a span of two years between 2016 and 2018, and all but once of them came at the highest level.

Even more interesting is their record this year where both of them have won five more matches than they have lost. Of course Doi made it as far as the first round at the US Open while Hibino didn’t qualify for it, with that being the differentiating factor in two of the other three Grand Slam competitions as well.

Doi is coming off a major upset, beating the second seeded Veronika Kudermetova in the semi-final, winning it in straight sets. Hibino needed to overcome Mihaela Buzarnescu in her previous match but not before she had lost the first set and then completed the win. Earlier though, Hibino upset the top seeded Hsieh Su-wei to round off a surprise result under her belt too.

What is not one bit surprising is the fact there’s not much to choose between these two players on paper and when one looks at the odds. Doi, on account of her slightly higher WTA ranking is 10/11 to win this match while Hibino starts off at 1/1. We think Doi’s experience should see her through in this one.

Doi v Hibino Tip: Doi to win: 10/11 (888Sport)
