Daniil Medvedev v Evgeny Donskoy Head to Head

The pair have met once before, in the first round of the US Open last week. Medvedev won that encounter in straight sets.

Medvedev Back on Home Soil After US Triumphs

Medvedev is back on Russian soil after a triumphant US hard court season which saw him reach four successive finals in major tournaments – in Washington, Montreal, Cincinnati and the US Open. Although the only event he won was the Cincinnati Masters, the biggest title of his career to date, that sequence has propelled him to a new career high of four in the world rankings.

Moreover, the way he fought back from two sets down to Rafael Nadal in the final in New York gives promise that there will be other Grand Slam opportunities to come for the 23 year-old, and that, one day soon, it will be his turn to lift one of the major trophies.

He will be keen to prove to the Russian public this week that they have a future major winner on their hands.

Donskoy, Russian Wildcard

29 year old Donskoy is currently ranked 118 in the world, and spends most of his time on the Challenger circuit, where he has won 12 titles. He was a runner-up at Nottingham in June. losing to Dan Evans of Great Britain, but he did lift the trophy in Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan, in July.

On the senior tour he has had very little success this year. He failed to qualify for any of the first three Grand Slam tournaments – in Melbourne, Roland Garros, or Wimbledon – and although he did make it through to the main draw at the US Open, he was beaten in the first round by Borna Coric in straight sets.

However, he did enjoy an easy win in the first round here on Tuesday, defeating the Italian Matteo Viola for the loss of just three games.

Medvedev v Donskoy Predictions & Tips

Medvedev is the overwhelming odds-on favourite to win this match at 1/8, whilst Donskoy is priced at 15/2. It would be a major upset if Donskoy were to spoil Medvedev’s home coming, and there is little in his recent form to suggest such a result is possible.

Tip: Medvedev to win in straight sets: 4/11 (888Sport)
