Mikhail Kukushkin v Joao Sousa Head to Head

The pair have played each other four times before, with Sousa leading their head to head series by three matches to one. Kukushkin won their first meeting in Segovia in 2011, but Sousa has won all the subsequent matches, including their encounter in the Davis Cup earlier this year..

Kukushkin, Rolling Back the Years in St. Petersburg

31 year-old Kazakh player Kukushkin has won one ATP career title, but that was as far back as nine years ago when he clinched the title here in this same tournament. He did, though, reach his first final in four years in Marseille in February, where he was beaten by Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Now ranked 57 in the world, that performance in France represents his best of the year, although he did get to the final of the Challenger event in Phoenix, where he was beaten by Matteo Berrettini.

He began his campaign in Russia this week by beating the Italian wildcard Jannik Sinner in straight sets in the first round, and then followed that up on Wednesday with a straight sets over Damir Dzumhur to take his place in the quarter-final.

Sousa, Surprise Victor over Khachanov

The way that this tournament had been set-up, it was meant to produce an all-Russian final between Daniil Medvedev and Karen Khachanov. Unfortunately for the home supporters, Sousa had clearly failed to read the script, because he beat Khachanov, the number two seed and world number nine, in straight sets on Thursday.

That will rank alongside his best results of the year which include a fourth round appearance at Wimbledon, and a semi-final at Gstaad. It has been more than a year since he was last in a final but, with Khachanov gone from his side of the draw, he will be hoping to end that barren spell.

Kukushkin v Sousa Predictions & Tips

This is a hard result to call, with both men evenly matched and close to each other in the world rankings. Kukushkin is quoted at 6/5, whilst Sousa is priced at 3/2. However, based on his superior had to head record, Sousa should just win this.

Tip: Sousa to win in three sets: 11/8 (888Sport)
