Andy Murray v Alex de Minaur Head to Head

The pair have never played each other before. This will be the first meeting between the 32-year old Scot and de Minaur, twelve years his junior.

Murray’s First ATP Singles Win in Eight Months

Tuesday marked a significant personal milestone for Murray, because he achieved his first senior ATP singles win since January, when he announced to the watching world that he may have to retire from tennis altogether because of continuous hip problems.

Since then he has had revolutionary surgery enabling him to move around the court again, and has made tentative steps back, first in doubles – he partnered Serena Williams in the mixed event at Wimbledon – and then in singles.

His first attempt at Winston-Salem in August ended in a first round defeat at the hands of the experienced American Tennys Sandgren, and after just playing a Challenger event in Mallorca in between, he might have feared the worst when he was paired with the same opponent in the first round here on Tuesday.

It will, therefore, be of great encouragement to the three-time Grand Slam winner that he was able to beat Sandgren this time. He will take huge self-belief from the fact that, not only did he compete tor-to-toe with the American in a tough first set but, having had match point in the second, he shrugged off the disappointment of losing that set to close out the match easily in the third.

De Minaur’s Maiden Singles Titles in 2019

De Minaur is one of the most promising young players in the world. The 20 year old who represents Australia, but also has dual Spanish citizenship, has already appeared in four ATP finals, and, having lost the two he contested in 2018, has won two titles so far this year, firstly in Sydney in January, and then again in Atlanta in July.

Then last month he had his best ever showing in a Grand Slam, getting to the fourth round at the US Open, and beating Kei Nishikori of Japan, the number seven seed, along the way, before losing to Grigor Dimitrov.

He is prone to inconsistency, because of his age, but has the potential to become a top ten player.

Murray v De Minaur Predictions & Tips

De Minaur is the odds-on favourite to win this match at 1/2, whilst Murray is priced at 8/5. Murray making the second round in this event will attract all the headlines, but to expect him to win two matches in a row at this level so soon into his comeback is probably expecting too much. That is also to underplay what a dangerous opponent De Minaur is, with the ability to go deep into this tournament.

Tip: Sandgren to win in three sets: 3/1 (888Sport)
