David Goffin v Hyeon Chung Head to Head

The pair have played each other three times before, with Goffin currently leading their head to head series by two matches to one. Goffin won their first match in 2016 in Marseille easily, but Chung avenged that loss at the Rogers Cup in Montreal in 2017. However, a few months later, the pair met again in Basel, with Goffin again emerging the winner.

Goffin Survived First-Round Battle

Goffin has had a tough tournament so far, starting with his first round match with Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta, the winner in Chengdu last week.  He won only a single game in the first set and, when the second set went to a tie-break, he was on the verge of defeat. However, he summoned up all his fighting qualities to withstand the challenge of the Spaniard, levelled the match, and then closed out the contest in the third set to love.

His second round match was not a lot easier. It is true that he beat the Canadian Denis Shapovalov in straight sets, but both went to a tie-break, and there was never more than a couple of points separating the two men.

However, having got this far, he will want to reach the semi-final at least, continuing his late season form which saw him reach the final in Halle, the quarter-finals of Wimbledon, and the final again in Cincinnati, his first time he had got that far at a Masters event.

Chung Season Ravaged by Injury

Having been ranked as high as 19 in the world barely 18 months ago, Chung has slipped down to his current standing of 143 after a season which has been ravaged by injury. He did not pick up a racquet in anger between the Madrid Masters in April, and the Challenger event in Chengdu at the end of last month, which he subsequently won, beating Yuichi Sugita of Japan in the final.

That was his ninth Challenger tour title, although he has yet to enjoy success on the senior tour.

He promptly entered the main draw in Chengdu, but was beaten in the first round by Joao Sousa.

This week he began by beating Lorenzo Sonego, coming from a set down to triumph over the Italian. And then he had an impressive win over the world number 30, Marin Cilic of Croatia, in his second round match on Thursday, although he again needed three sets to progress.

Goffin v Chung Predictions & Tips

Goffin is the odds-on favourite to win this match at  51/100, whilst Chung is priced at 31/20. Whilst Goffin has had to work hard to get this far, he will now want to get and challenge for the title. Chung, after a long period on the side-lines, will be glad just to be playing again, but the Belgian should edge this.

Tip: Goffin to win in straight sets: 7/5 (888Sport)
