Dominic Thiem joined four others to make it to the 2019 ATP Finals, en route his title win at the China Open last week. Thiem, who clinched the place in the ATP Finals when he overcame Karen Khachanov in the semi-finals on Saturday now has Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Daniil Medvedev for company for the ATP finals.

Thiem also went on to win the China Open title after defeating Stefanos Tsitsipas in a tough three-setter with the Austrian staging a comeback and winning the match after losing the first set.

Ranked fourth in the world, Thiem overcame Tsitsipas 3-6, 6-4, 6-1, to win the China Open. Thiem had to beat some tough opponents on his way to the final as he dispatched players like Richard Gasquet, Karen Khachanov and Andy Murray en route to the final.

Thiem’s form had earlier let him down since making the final of the Roland Garros earlier this year. He was sent packing in the very first round of Wimbledon and then again in the US Open. Although he won one 250 title between that period, in Austria, his performances had been underwhelming, so this title win will come as a huge relief for the world number five.

On the other hand, Tsitsipas will be frustrated to have lost after leading in the match with the first set. The young Greek will now be looking forward to the next event in order to seal his place in the top eight of the world to qualify in the ATP Tour Finals.

Tsitsipas’ form in recent months has struggled, making him drop from his career best fifth rank to his current world No. 7 rank. Overall his year has certainly been his breakthrough season, but he has not been able to sustain that in the latter part of the season.

He will hope he can push on till the latter stages of the Shanghai Masters where he will begin his campaign in the second round on Wednesday after receiving an opening bye.
