Fabio Fognini v Andy Murray Head to Head

The pair have met seven times so far in their career with the Brit leading by 4-3. Murray won at Wimbledon in 2017, Rio Olympics in 2016, Valencia in 2014, and at Monte Carlo back in 2009.

The Italian, on the other hand, won at Rome in 2017, Davis Cup of 2014, as well as they, first-ever meeting at Montreal Masters in 2007.

Fognini Looking to Continue his Impressive Run to Qualify for London

Despite a first-round exit at the US Open, Fognini’s performances over the last two months have been impressive. He has reached the quarter-finals of four tournaments on both sides of the US Open.

This solid run has put him right into the mix of players that are eying the last available spots at the season-ending ATP World Tour Finals. Only 240 points separate players ranked from seventh to 13th. Another strong performance this week can put him in a strong position with just four weeks to go.

He does not have any points to defend this week. He came through an impressive straight-sets victory over Sam Querrey in the first round.

Andy Murray Looking to Break into Top 100

The week started with very positive news for Murray as the latest rankings showed a jump of over 200 places for him, and he is now ranked 289 in the world. This would not be a big comfort for a player who was the world number one for 37 weeks straight just a little over two years ago. But with the kind of past 12 months the Brit has had, he would welcome any bit of positive news that comes his way.

The jump in the rankings came thanks to an impressive outing in Beijing last week. He started the campaign by shocking everyone by beating world number 13 & US Open semi-finalist Matteo Berrettini. His run came to an end at the quarter-finals against Dominic Thiem.

But he showed enough signs last week as well as in Mallorca last month that he still has it in him. The next four weeks are a free hit for Murray with no points to defend. He came through a hard-fought match against Juan Londero in the first round.

Fabio Fognini v Andy Murray Predictions & Tips

On paper, this is a match between a player knocking on the doors to break into the world top 10 and another who was outside the top 500 last week. But in reality, the gulf in the class of both the players is much more narrow.

Fognini still has the motivation to gain points to make it to London. Whereas Murray in his own words is still taking it easy on his body and the faster courts in Shanghai may be too much for him.
