John Isner v Lucas Pouille Head to Head

Despite being so closely ranked – Isner’s 17th to Pouille’s 22nd on the ATP Rankings – they haven’t yet played a single match against each other before this one.

Isner Looking for a Strong Finish

It’s been a middling second half of the season for John Isner, but a lot of it can probably be attributed to the American feeling his way back after his injury at the Miami Masters final. He had kept away from the clay court season – and clay hasn’t been Isner’s strongest suit either – and since his return he did make it to the final at Newport where he won the title.

However, what’s followed might have left him slightly disappointed, having not won three matches in a row in any of the eight tournaments he has played. His best showing, which came at the US Open, also saw him getting knocked out in the third round, while there were other, earlier losses that have pushed his ranking down to 17th in the world. That was following his ninth rank earlier in the season.

What would have pleased Isner no ends is his opening round victory against Australia’s Alex de Minaur, a player who had only recently won his third title of the year at Zhuhai. A 7-6, 6-4 win over the 24th-ranked Aussie should get him in the right frame of mind going into this encounter against…

…Lucas Pouille, an Australian Open Semi-Finalist

Pouille is a former top-10 player whose ranking had reached a season-high of 17th in the world following his exploits at the Australian Open early in 2019. Since then, it’s been slightly up and down for the Frenchman.

So much so that despite that semifinal at the Australian Open, Pouille has a poor 12-13 win-loss record on hard court surfaces this season. There was a solid showing at the Japan Open where he reached the quarterfinal before going down to Novak Djokovic but a second round defeat at the US Open and an opening loss in Zhuhai to players ranked far lower than him have added a question-mark or two around that first major showing.

And his 6-7, 6-4, 6-4 win in the first round here at the Shanghai Masters against the 231st-ranked Zhe Li have only added to those questions. Isner could prove to be a handful.

Isner v Pouille Predictions & Tips

It comes as no surprise that Isner is 10/17 to win this given Pouille’s showing in recent times. In fact for a player who hasn’t found it too difficult dispatching opponents with his big, booming serve – especially those not in the top 10 – those odds represent brilliant value and we would recommend an Isner win here.

Tip: Isner to win: 10/17 (888Sport)
