Julia Goerges v Jelena Ostapenko Head to Head

This is a first-ever meeting between Goerges and Ostapenko.

Goerges Will Play In Her Third Luxembourg Final

It has been an up-and-down season for Julia Goerges, but she could end the year on a high if she can successfully defend her Luxembourg Open title. The big-serving German woman will play in her third final after finishing runner-up to Roberta Vinci nine years ago and beating Belinda Bencic in last year’s final. She could become the first woman to win back-to-back crowns in Luxembourg since Kim Clijsters.

Goerges who broke the world’s top-10 last year after a handful of searing performances has dropped down to No.26 in the world. But on a more positive note, she could become the first woman on the WTA in 2019 to defend two titles. She has successfully retained her ASB Classic title in Auckland in January when she beat Canadian powerhouse Bianca Andreescu and could do so this Sunday with victory over Ostapenko.

Goerges will be playing in her 17th WTA singles final and seeking her 8th career title. She is currently on a nine-match winning streak in Luxembourg, but she had to dig herself out of a one-set hole in three of her four matches this week. Will she have enough left in the tank to clinch her second title?

Will Ostapenko Fall Short In A Second Successive Week?

Latvian wild card Jelena Ostapenko burst onto the scene when she stunned Simona Halep to win the French Open in 2017.  She would go on to win another title in Seoul later that year and peak at a career-high ranking of No.5 in the world in March 2018 after reaching the Miami Open final.

But Ostapenko is yet to win another title ever since. Her ranking plummeted down to No.82 after a disastrous first half of the 2019 season in which she failed to win back-to-back matches in over five tournaments.

The 22-year-old has since teamed up with former Wimbledon champion Marion Bartoli in the last fortnight and their partnership has already paid dividends. Ostapeko has reached back-to-back under Bartoli’s tutelage most recently at Linz last weekend when she lost to America’s fast-rising star Coco Gauff.

Goerges v Ostapenko Predictions & Tips

Ostapenko can be a joy to watch especially when her ground-strokes are on point. But she can also be as erratic as they come. Goerges has a phenomenal record in Luxembourg and usually takes her level up a notch in finals. I expect the experienced German to bag her second title on Sunday.

Tip: Goerges to win in straight sets: 15/8 3/1 with 888Sport
