Novak Djokovic v Kyle Edmund Head to Head

This will be their sixth time that Djokovic and Edmund will be facing off in an encounter, and surprise surprise, Edmund has actually managed to defeat his opponent once before this. That result came last year at the Madrid Masters where the Brit edged out Djokovic in three. On hard court, Djokovic has won three without dropping a set while winning their previous meeting at Wimbledon in 2018 in four sets.

Djokovic Stretched by Little-Known Frenchman

Safe to say it was a nervous start from Djokovic, as he scrambled to a 7-6, 6-4 win over Corentin Moutet in his second round match. In the first set, the top-seeded Serb was required to save a couple of set-points on his opponent’s serve before turning on the heat and winning the encounter.

Djokovic later admitted he hasn’t been feeling at his best health, and that could be a factor as he goes along in this tournament. After all, Djokovic will have to win five matches in five days to win the tournament, and if fitness remains a concern, that could get difficult. More so if he could be facing Rafael Nadal for the title.

However, that’s for later and he will have a small matter of getting past Edmund for now and that shouldn’t be that difficult. Not on indoor courts given Djokovic’s hold over his opponent on non-clay surfaces. The question, however, is if he can shrug off rustiness and health concerns and keep digging into his reserves to advance.

Poor Season but Edmund Showing Signs of Fight

We have spoken about this earlier too, but it’s been a forgettable season for the former world number 14 Briton. That he has actually managed to win two matches in this tournament, beating Diego Schwartzman in the process, and both in straight sets, is a huge thing.

And that’s because of the way things had gone for Edmund since Daniil Medvedev destroyed him at the Montreal Masters earlier in August. A 6-3, 6-0 defeat was followed by another seven straight defeats, and to players from all corners of the ATP rankings.

So much so that 2018 European Open winner Edmund had fallen to 75th in the world at the start of this week, his lowest ranking since 2016. And now he has this task of trying to make it three in a row by beating the world number one. Now that would be some scalp given the context, wouldn’t it?

Novak Djokovic v Kyle Edmund Predictions & Tips

While an Edmund win would be a fairy-tale story a lot of British fans would hope for, Djokovic can be expected to grind through his health concerns and make it through to the quarterfinals.
