Jo-Wilfred Tsonga v Jan-Lennard Struff Head to Head

The pair have met five times so far on tour. The first three matches were won by Tsonga, whereas Struff has won the previous two encounters.

Tsonga Knocked Berrettini Out in the Second

After winning his first master’s match in two years with his first-round victory earlier this week, Tsonga caused an upset when he took out US Open quarterfinalist Matteo Berrettini in the second round. The loss not only hampered the Italian’s chances to qualify for London but also showed that Tsonga was back in form after a few indifferent results last month.

Tsonga, in fact, has had an excellent season so far. A hamstring injury limited his game time last year, and he fell outside the top 250 in rankings as a result. But this year he has come back strongly. He has won two ATP and one Challenger level titles this year, as well as three other semifinals, runs. His fitness seems to be much better, which has resulted in him playing more than 60 matches in a year for the first time in five years.

In fact, his performances have got better as the season has developed. His win-loss record since the US Open is extremely impressive 16-3. He is in the bottom half of the draw, and should he progress to the next round, he is likely to meet Rafael Nadal in the next round.

Struff Looks Exhausted at Fag End of the Season

The 29-year-old German has had a busy few days lately. After reaching the quarter-finals in Vienna last week, he has played two grueling three-setters this week in Paris. He has also been playing in the doubles section here and went out in the third round. This will be Struff’s fifth match in four days across both categories this week. And the effect of playing so much has been visible this week.

In fact, despite being in the top 50 in singles, Struff has been focusing more on playing doubles in the last two years than ever before. 2018 & 2019 are likely to be two years where he has played the least number of singles matches in the previous decade. On the other hand, these two years are top two in terms of playing doubles matches in a calendar year in his career.

This clearly shows that he is picking and choosing the tournaments that he plays on the singles circuit.

Jo-Wilfred Tsonga v Jan-Lennard Struff Predictions & Tips

Struff was impressive in his hard-fought victory against world number eight Karen Khachanov. But Tsonga is looking in ominous form this week. And indoor courts and the home crowd is likely to be too much for the German to handle.
