Rafael Nadal v Denis Shapovalov Head to Head

The pair have played each other twice before, with each player having won once. Shapovalov shocked Nadal as a teenager at the Canadian Masters in 2017, but Nadal got his revenge on the clay of Rome last year.

Nadal Still Hoping to End the Year as World Number One

Nadal has had another fine year, with Grand Slam wins in Paris and New York taking him to within one of Roger Federer’s record of twenty. He has also won two Masters’ titles in 2019, in Rome and Canada, and still has an outside chance, if he can get to the final here, of pipping Novak Djokovic to the coveted number one spot at the end of the year.

He has played very little since his win at Flushing Meadows – apart from the Laver Cup, this is his first tournament since then. He cruised through his first two matches, beating the French wildcard Adrian Mannarino, and the Swiss number sixteen seed Stan Wawrinka easily in two sets.

Local favourite Jo-Wilfried Tsonga offered stiffer opposition in their quarter-final on Friday, forcing the world number two to a first set tie-break. But, having lost that, his challenge crumbled in the second set as Nadal ran away with the match.

Shapovalov, Enjoying Late Season Success

For much of 2019, Shapovalov endured a frustrating time on court. A semi-final at the Miami Masters in March suggested more was to come, but, instead, he struggled for form and consistency, and had to take a back seat to friend and compatriot Felix Auger-Aliassime, who overtook him in the race to supplant Milos Raonic as Canada’s number one player.

However, two weeks ago in Stockholm, he had a major breakthrough, winning the Swedish Open, his first ATP singles title, beating Filip Krajinovic in the final.

And this week in Paris he has beaten three seeded players in a row – Fabio Fognini, Alexander Zverev, and Gael Monfils – to make his second Masters semi-final of the year.

Nadal v Shapovalov Predictions & Tips

Nadal is the overwhelming favourite to win this match at 2/11, whilst Shapovalov is priced at 4/1. The Canadian may have beat Nadal the first time they met, but that was a shock result and should not be taken as a guide to the norm. Nadal should win this match, and with the prospect of facing Novak Djokovic in the final, he has every incentive to do so.

Tip: Nadal to win in straight sets: 4/5 4/9 at 888Sport
